No, it’s not a coincidence that Tarzana seems to share its name with a certain jungle-dwelling fictional character. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs moved to Southern California with his family in 1919, purchasing a ranch that he dubbed “Tarzana.”
But before that, the Tarzana area was a sprawling expanse of top-tier cattle ranches in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Only wealthy ranchers and upper-crust settlers would have been able to own property in the area before the early 20th century.
Today, Tarzana is an affluent suburban area that is adjacent to both Encino and Woodland Hills. Its convenient location lies near the intersection of the 101 and 405 freeways, making it an ideal jumping off point for a trip to just about anywhere. And of course, that trip should always start in an LA City Cab!
