San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab is looking to contract with qualified independent contractors who wish to provide taxicab services in Los Angeles, Westwood and the San Fernando Valley.

What is an Independent Contractor?

As an independent contractor (sometimes referred to as a “lease driver”), you will be in business for yourself as a self-employed taxicab driver and NOT an employee.  You pay a weekly lease fee to San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab or the Owner Operator of the taxi cab, in exchange for a taxicab and the right to operate your taxicab in areas in which San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab is licensed to operate.  You also pay for your own gas.  In addition to receiving calls for service dispatched by San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab, you are free to advertise and solicit taxicab business on your own.  You are free to set your own schedule and decide what days and hours you wish to operate your taxicab.  However you must comply with a dress code requirement.

100% of all fares and tips and other earnings received from your passengers belong to you.  You are responsible for reporting and paying taxes on the money you make from your business, as well as for purchasing any insurance you wish to carry in addition to automobile liability insurance, which is included at no extra charge as part of your lease of the taxicab.  Lastly, being an independent contractor you are not entitled to Workers Compensation Insurance.

In exchange for the weekly lease fee, you receive the following:

  • A permitted taxicab fully equipped with a computerized dispatch and radio systems
  • A non-exclusive authorization to provide taxicab service within an area or areas in which San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab holds operating authority.
  • The non-exclusive right to operate under the trade name and goodwill of City Cab established though years of valued service in the community.
  • Marketing and advertising to promote your business
  • Telephone Call Service to accept calls for service
  • The non-exclusive right to accept or reject all dispatches for taxicab service received by San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab in the are or areas in which
  • you have chosen to provide service
  • Liability insurance covering your taxicab while providing taxicab service
  • 24 hour maintenance program
  • Cashier Office

What Qualifications are required to be an Independent Contractor?

  • Must be 25 years of age or older
  • Provide proof of citizenship, a Green Card or a valid U.S. work permit
  • Minimum of 2 years of driving experience in California
  • Must speak, read and write basic English
  • Obtain a DMV H-6 print out issued within the last 30 days
  • No misdemeanor or felony convictions
  • Must not have any DUI or Reckless Driving violations
  • No more than 2 driving points within a 12 month period
  • No more than 4 driving points within a 3 year period
  • Upon successful fulfillment of the taxi company requirements to be a self employed Lease Driver, you must agree to enroll in a Drug and Alcohol Program (of our choice for prior and future random testing-while contracted as a taxi driver.)
  • Must obtain a taxi cab driver’s license from the city or cities in which you will be operating
  • Must agree to comply with all federal and state laws and all rules and regulations regarding taxicab service of the city in which you will be operating
  • Experienced taxicab drivers must be in good standing with the previous taxicab company they contracted with.

This posting does not constitute an offer or an independent contractor contract or other position with San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab.  Contracts are awarded based upon existing business demand and necessity, and may or may not be available at the time that you contact us.  Contracts have a specific term and both the Independent Contractor and San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab are free to renew or not to renew a contract for any reason.

 

This is not an offer of employment.  Parties with whom San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab enters into an independent contract agreement with will not become the employee of San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab and there will be no relationship of employer/employee, principal/agent, or master/servant, either express or implied, between the independent contractor and San Gabriel Transit, Inc dba City Cab.  Independent Contractors contracting with San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab will not be treated as an employee of San Gabriel Transit, Inc. dba City Cab for any purpose, statutory or otherwise, including, but not limited to, federal Insurance Contributions Act; the Social Security Act; the Federal Unemployment Tax Act; the Internal Revenue Code; the National Labor Relations Act, as amended; Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; the Civil Rights Act of 1866; The California Unemployment Insurance Code; the California Labor Code; Wage Orders of the California Industrial Welfare Commission; and Federal and State income taxi withholding at source.
